The day old saying ' A dog is for life, not just for Christmas'

As i've got older and more experienced i've got a lot more passionate about dog ownership, not about me owning them about appropriate people owning them.

In reality owning a dog is a luxury, it shouldn't be a right. I say this because unfortunately anyone can go out and buy a dog, but not actually be able to care for it, or want to care for it properly. You see way too many posts on social media of dogs being rehomed because the family who bought them cant handle the dogs energy, or cant afford the vets bills. All things that should've been researched way before bringing the puppy home.

The problem with the way things are at the moment is that you can just pop on social media or on google on your phone and actually pick up a puppy the same day, because there are no harsh regulations for people breeding their dogs. So there are constantly back yard bred puppies around that are looking for homes, from the two dogs who had an accidental litter.

If you're purchasing a puppy properly, you do months of research, you look into the breed of dog you want and check its the right match for you and your life style. You would spend months even years researching breeders for the type of dog you want, following their stories and seeing what kind of dogs they produce. See if they produce the type of temperaments that you like.

A dog in front of the Christmas tree

When i decided i would eventually want another dog i got in touch with two breeders from different parts of the UK, i told them i'm not currently ready for another puppy but i want to build up a relationship with the breeder and see what they produce. So that's what i did, for two years i followed two breeders on facebook and instagram and watched their life. I saw what they produced, how they handled things and what they did with their dogs. I finally decided which breeder i wanted to go for and let them know, i told them that in about a year or so ill be ready.

So just before Christmas last year i got a message saying a litter was due in January was i ready, and i was. From there i followed that breeders journey of my boys litter from the date of confirmed pregnancy. I watched a live stream of his birth, and watched live videos on facebook from the day he was born until the day i collected him.

My point with all of this is that getting a dog whether you rehome or you buy from a puppy is that its not a last minute decision to make. You should be doing lots of research, if you're rescuing, find a rescue whose values you appreciate, one that can match a dog to your lifestyle.

A dog really is for life not just for Christmas, and if you wake up one day and think you're going to buy your kids or partner a dog for Christmas then you are part of the problem. You are feeding into the BYB pockets, and rolling that demand for poorly bred dogs. Majority of good breeders have a waiting list that you have to go on, you cant just pick it up the day you decide on it. Good rescues will also put you through interviews and more.

Buying or rescuing a dog should be a long process and a life long decision.
