At the end of the day if everyone has the thought process of 'well its not my problem' then it becomes a huge problem for the owner of the venue, they have to pay more to have things cleaned or fixed. Which costs money, the more money they pay out the less profit they make. For these owners it may end up meaning that the value in the business just isn't there anymore and can actually end up forcing them to close!

Lets think of a secure field. If client after client are leaving their dog poops and not cleaning them up then it holds an array of issues.

  • Health - While hopefully most dog owners would be responsible in not taking ill dogs to these fields, if one unfortunate dog has something contagious like Giardia then this puts all other users at risk of catching it. This includes humans as Giardia is a zoonotic disease which means it affects multiple species. The dogs may have worms that the owner does or doesn't know about, and all of this risks spreading it to the hundreds of users that use that field.

  • Time - Cleaning up takes time if you're doing it after lots of dogs. If no one in a day bothers to pick it up, this then means the owner of the field has to take time out of their day to go round cleaning up after dogs they dont own. That is not their job or responsibility. This in turn either means bookings are restricted so that the owner has time to go in and do it without taking time out of their day, or they have to take extra time out of their day to ensure it gets done.

  • Reputation - No one likes walking around in a field of poop, and in an enclosed secure field this is a lot more recognisable. If you are using dirty facilities the blame at the very end of the day comes down to the owners regardless, which isn't fair. With this its likely they will get complaints or even bad reviews, even though they're not the one who has left anything behind.

  • Lack of business - If bad reviews are left, or even the owner decides to not allow people to rent it out any further then their business starts to lack. They start to lose money due to peoples laziness.

Now this doesn't only happen in secure fields, it could be halls, car parks or any other type of venue. It also doesn't always need to be about leaving dog poop around, if some of the clients dogs are destructive it will leave something behind that needs to be fixed or cleaned up. It will always be down to whoever is renting the venue to ensure that everything is correct when they leave, to ensure they return it in an appropriate state.

A dog who digs could mean a whole that someone breaks their ankle in.

A dog who chews could mean new chairs for a club hall.

A dog who scent marks could mean a venue having to pay extra for a cleaner.

An owner who doesn't pick up their dog poop could mean sickness for a lot of dogs.

So whether you are a pet professional or pet owner please take your time to ensure you clean up after yourself when you are renting facilities before we end up losing the option to use them at all!

With the option of being a dog owner or professional comes the responsibility of care and cleaning up after them.
