Experience isn't everything...

Now this may go in a different direction to what you’re expecting to read, but this post isn’t about pet professionals.

This is about the generation of people who are out there saying “I know what I’m on about I’ve had dogs for years”. Ownership isn't necessarily good experience. Just because you’ve had dogs for years doesn’t mean you know anything about them. Just the same as having a driving license doesn’t make you a good driver.

Unfortunately as with anything there is a HUGE divide between the generations when it comes to all things dog. Whether it’s feeding, exercise or training there seems to be a big difference in opinion and what is the correct way to do things.

The big thing is what works for you and your dog, grandparents may say “oh but my dog lived on scraps for years and they lived until they were 12 years old”. That doesn’t mean that will work for your dog, it may be you feed them a high quality kibble and that works for you both and that’s okay.

Too many people sit comparing themselves to other people and wondering what is and isn’t right. While yes there are preferred ways of things, whether it’s feeding a fresher or better diet, or training your dog a certain way. There is always going to be someone who will disagree with what you are doing, and unfortunately you’ve just got to get on with it.

The younger generation, so my generation or younger, are slowly having a better

understanding of dog behaviour. A lot of us have had to learn after the impact lockdown have had on a lot of us and our dogs.

While this isn’t the greatest situation it also means that change in the future is coming. It means that we can start being accountable for what we do with our dogs, and our dogs behaviour.

Seeking help when they need it rather just saying “they’re just being a dog” or “oh they’re friendly” when actually they’re just rude. Learning about the foundations of dog life, learning about canine communication skills and body language. All of this makes you a better dog owner.
