Owning the right breed for you is something I'm extremely passionate about. Not choosing a breed because it looks cute. When choosing a dog you need to compare the dogs character traits with your life style, if you're someone who enjoys lazy Sundays then a dog who requires less exercise may be the dog for you. A dog breed who was created to be a companion - something like a King Charles cavalier spaniel. If you're someone who is active and likes to hike, something more active like a Visla or Dalmatian may be more suited.

There are 7 breed type categories including - working, hound, terrier, gun dog, pastoral, utility, and toy.

Working - this is generally a dog who is given a job. It can be generalised by breeds. For example a border collie, working on a farm.

Hound - you have sight hound, scent hounds, and then a combination of the both. This could include beagles or Lurcher.

Terrier - these originate from dogs who were bred to hunt vermin. This includes Yorkshire terriers and jack Russell terriers.

Gun dog - gun dogs are a type of hunting dog, used to retrieve, flush or point. This includes setters, spaniels and labradors.

Pastoral - these tend to be working and herding dogs that were bred to work with livestock on a form. Generally these are bigger type dogs like Caucasian shepherds.

Utility - dogs that don't fit into some of the other categories so easily tend to be put into the utility group. This can range from Dalmatians to schnauzers.

Toy - this group of dog is generalised by the size of the dog. Including the smaller of poodles, chihuahua and Chinese crested.

Finding your dogs breed type and doing research into that and the breed itself is key to preparing yourself for dog ownership.
