Does my dogs breed restrict me in what i can do with them?

In short, no.

Unless your dog unfortunately has some physical aspects which would restrict them from doing activities then there's no reason they cant. What i mean by this is Bulldogs not being able to swim unaided due to their body conformation, or Daschunds being unable to do agility due to their backs.

Yes some breeds will be better at certain sports, but it doesn't mean you cant try. While yes, Spaniels may be quicker than a Dalmatian when it comes to agility, Dalmatians are still very agile and can definitely have fun and even compete in the sport. Labradors may be more naturally inclined when it comes to gun dog training, but i've seen doodles do it too!

At the end of the day, training your dog all comes down to what you want to do with it. You can do as little or as much as you want to do with them (obviously as a trainer i would advise do more). You can try every sport under the sun to see what suits your dog, what you enjoy and what both of you find appealing.

With Woody we have tried;

  • Agility

  • Scentwork

  • Hoopers

  • Mantrailing

  • Gundog Training

  • Obedience

  • Trick Training

So far Bucky has tried;

  • Agility

  • Ringcraft

  • Scentwork

  • Tricks

Every dog you have will have different skills, Bucky is much better at Scentwork than Woody as he is more driven by his nose. Whereas Woody excelled at Agility in his prime. Use training to build your bond with your dog, and see where it can take you!

Your only obstacle is you.

You can try all kinds of training just for fun!
