When getting a dog sometimes it’s easy to forget that they have basic care needs like humans. Dogs with long hair will need to be groomed more often than those who have short hair, nail clipping, weight management, ear cleaning all these things are often overlooked when getting a dog but these things are part of their basic need.
As a rule of thumb dogs nails that touch the floor when they stand are classed as too long and need cutting. Why do they need cutting? If they aren’t cut they can be more prone to catching, breaking and snagging which can lead to infection and if left too long the quick underneath (the blood vessel) the nail will grow which will make it more difficult for the nail to be cut down without risk of infection or injury. If you don’t visit a groomer often vets offer nail cutting clinics and if are part of the vets pet plan it’s most likely included in this cost so take advantage!

Weight management is another important part of being a dog owner. It isn’t healthy for a dog to be overweight. When looking at purchasing or rescuing a certain breed it can be helpful to look at average weights for that breed but its important to remember that every dog is different so the averages can differ slightly which is completely normal. A healthy Labrador Retriever can be 25kg in weight even though the average for the breed is 28-35kg, it all depends on the dog, its lifestyle and exercise routine . If you’re ever in doubt ask your trainer or vet for advice.
Finally, groomers are a really helpful resource in helping to maintain general care for your dog. They can do basic ear and eye cleans and nail trimming and will advise if they have any concerns regarding your pet. Whist they do come with an extra cost having your pet groomed and maintained can assist with preventing issues before they arise.
